When you are staying with a third party and you do not have proof of address, you can ask them to write a certificate of accommodation (also called a certificate of address).
This document helps to facilitate your administrative procedures , such as opening a bank account, taking out insurance or certain requests for identity documents.

According to the website service-public.fr , a foreigner (excluding European, Andorran or Monegasque nationals) wishing to come to France for a private or family visit of less than 3 months must present proof of accommodation to obtain their visa or residence permit.
